Phillip Mabote?s artistic practice is a deeply personal exploration of identity and belonging, symbolised through his recurring motif of eagles bound by rope. His works metaphorically represent his relentless search for his biological mother, reflecting a broader quest for self-discovery. Introduced in his 2015 piece Never Give Up, the eagle embodies tireless pursuit, sharp vision, and spiritual depth, drawing connections to African ancestry and universal themes of searching for one?s origins. Influenced by his upbringing with a non-blood-related guardian, Mabote?s art serves as both a personal narrative and a unifying force for others facing similar struggles, offering a metaphorical compass toward understanding and resolution.
