Johannesburg-based, Ugandan-born self-taught artist Patrick Seruwu channels his gratitude and respect for the women who have shaped his life into his expressive gestural paintings. Raised by a single mother and surrounded by strong female figures, he gathers stories of resilience from the women he encounters in Johannesburg, blending them into abstract human forms rather than individual portraits. His use of dripping paint conveys the weight of their struggles, while splattered sections introduce moments of levity, capturing the complexities of Afro-urban female existence. Through his dynamic brushstrokes, Seruwu visually articulates the strength, hardship, and vibrancy of modern African women.
