Lebohang Sithole works with charcoal and soft pastels, materials that are both delicate and deeply tied to the South African Black Art Tradition. These lo-fi, accessible mediums, often chosen by black artists historically denied expensive alternatives, shape his dynamic approach. His portraits of children reflect both their vulnerability and the fragility of his chosen materials, with jagged streaks and energetic compositions capturing the intensity of their life-worlds. Rather than adhering to calm, composed imagery, Sithole embraces movement, risk, and joy, using his art to upend stillness and celebrate the vibrant dynamism of life.
