ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ayola Goxo (1999 – ) is a self-taught artist born in the Eastern Cape, East London. He spent most of his early childhood in a small town called Butterworth and his teen years in East London before moving to Gauteng in 2019. Ayola started drawing as soon as he could hold a pen and held on to that skill as a tool to express himself and show his technique. At the age of 13 he made his first acrylic landscape painting and five years later started working at Belgravia Art Centre, where he took a big liking on the medium of oil paint.

Ayola works largely in the medium of oil paint among other traditional medium, working with styles such as realism and surrealism as a means to explore the evolution of humanity, the innate, psychological and emotional changes we go through as we move forward in modern society; we relinquish our innate patterns in order adjust and keep up with the changes we make as a society; our values change and we are either pushed closer or further away from the ways of nature, raising the question of what it means to evolve as a human species.

With his work, viewers are driven to look inward and challenge their thoughts and feelings about the evolution of humanity in modern society.
