ABOUT THE ARTIST
(SA 1948-)
Raymond Andrews was born in East London in 1948. He studied at the East London Technical College Art School under Jack Lugg and later at the Johannesburg Art School. In 1966 he met Cecil Skotnes and studied painting under his tutelage at Damelin College. In 1967 Skotnes introduced him to Ernest Ullman and for two years he worked as assistant to this famous sculptor and designer. In 1988 he was invited by Prof. Walter Battiss to join his staff at the UNISA Art Department as assistant and external tutor in graphic arts.
He has always favoured the woodcut as a medium of expression, but have produced metal engravings, glass paintings, many serigraphs and today works almost exclusively on engraved or incised and painted wood panels. He is particularly interested in man and myth, stylized fauna and flora, iconic and African imagery combined in a decorative and rhythmic style.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions in South Africa and internationally. Numerous articles on his work have been published in South African magazines and abroad and his wood panels and larger murals hang in public and private collections throughout Southern Africa, Europe, and America.
